We thought you might enjoy a brief history of Christmas trees and ornaments!
Fir trees were first used to celebrate the birth of Christ around 300 AD. Their triangular shape was thought to represent the Father, Son and Holy Spirit or the Trinity.
The tradition of decorating a tree began in Germany around 600 AD. Trees were usually decorated with edible items, such as cookies, nuts, and fruits, or flowers and candles. Glass blown ornaments were first created in Lauscha, Germany around 1860. The first American made glass ornaments were created in New York around 1870 by William DeMuth. In the 1880s, W. F. Woolworth visited Lauscha and discovered the glass ornaments. He began selling them in the United States, and built a great fortune. The ornament industry continues to grow. Today, millions are produced every year, and Christmas decoration sales are second only to gifts every holiday season.
